National Child Writes Competition Closes at the end of term!

Opportunities for young aspiring writers in primary school may abound, but we believe none are as comprehensive as the prize for the National Child Writes Competition. For only a $15 entry fee, the prize is mentoring for a year for a collaborative project, to publishing their own book! It is very special and the children who have already won in the past can speak to the depth of the experience and how special it really is. Of course, we can predict the outcome of the planned year – again, a published book, a book launch and lovely gifts for family and friends for Christmas. What we haven’t been able to predict is the adventures that may happen afterwards, like Kate McCullough being invited to the Queensland Writes Festival and here, she meets Li Cunxin, author of 'Mao’s Last Dancer' and currently the Director of the Queensland Ballet!

Boogie Books supports the Indigenous Literacy Foundation

Did you know the Australian Booksellers Association (of which, Boogie Books is a member, as well as the Small Press Network) is an incredible supporter of The Indigenous Literacy Foundation? With super authors like Andy Griffiths as ambassadors (as well as an incredible cast of like-minded authors and community members) it is a Foundation with energy and it is doing amazing things as it draws on the skills and expertise of the book industry to address children’s literacy levels in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. A really fun way to show your support is to organise a great book swap!
In the photo, Emma is with Andy Griffiths, Amabassador of the ILF and a child patient staying at Ronald McDonald House for his treatment, at the Silverton Primary School Book Launch.

What a lovely, lovely week! Australia is indeed story country – and we are also going to share some stories from our budding Child Writes authors this year by way of a sneak peak to what is being published at the end of the year! Child Writes in Pyjamas

Here, like all around Australia, happy readers donned their pyjamas and went to work for the day! So comfortable. The Pyjama Foundation supports angels who regularly read to children in foster care, helping them develop their literacy skills, offering learning support with homework, and importantly too, support for the foster carers themselves. Children spend time with their angel each week, usually during term time. Donations are always welcome for books for Pyjama Foundation Libraries – so don’t hesitate to get in contact with your local branch to make a donation today.

Current Project Melanoma Awareness Foundation

The Child Writes Team are currently working with amazing writers and illustrators in the Toowoomba region for a special project for the Melanoma Awareness Foundation.
We are creating a children’s picture book specifically with the messages regarding sun safety – protective clothing, hats, sunscreen! In South East Queensland, the UV index very very rarely dips below 3 – and yes, sun damage happens at 3 on the UV index, even in winter! Pictured here are the amazing writers, Shaelie, Emma, Georgia and Charlotte, who have created a wonderful story about Melanie, for our illustrators to work with August 20th and 21st. If you have any aspiring illustrators in your world who would like to participate, please yell – there are places still available for the weekend workshop.

Emma Mactaggart Guest Speaker

If July is any indication for how fabulous August is going to be – well, we are excited! Emma spoke to a captured audience of 200+ at a luncheon for St Anne’s Guild, Oakey, on Thursday 28th and shared the remarkable journey Child Writes has had over the last decade. With over 350 children being cajoled and guided through the program to-date, with another 20 children being involved in 2016 (7 individual books being created this year and the project for the MAF) and we shake our heads in disbelief at how quickly we are moving towards 400! Each time we present Child Writes, we also share the faces of all the participants, again, fully recognising and celebrating their incredible achievement of having published their own children’s picture book whilst they are in primary school.

Child Writes Literacy Heroes

We were so thrilled with the influx of nominations for literary hero’s and with a very decent bundle of certificates making their way into the hands of passionate literacy advocates, well, we know they were well received. Anne Anderson said, 'I was thrilled to receive my certificate, thank you. I feel privileged to work in an environment where I can make some contribution to the literacy development of young people.’ This was such a simple thing for us to do, to acknowledge the tireless work of teachers, and we will definitely champion this again next year. Please keep an eye-out for the call for nominations by hanging out with our faceobook page.

Child Writes Fund / Foundation International Read to Me! Day March 19

Each day we get a little closer cutting through the red tape that is in between us and the Child Writes Fund / Foundation! With the incredible support of our ‘soon to be elected’ chair, Mr Richard Hoult from Moore Stephens, we hope to have the Fund / Foundation finalised in time for next years International Read to Me! Day. The objective of IR2Me!Day is to give everyone an opportunity to stop and reconsider the reading habits at home, or at school, especially with our youngest community members. There is simply too much research indicating that if we read to our children, they have better educational outcomes. We really believe we need to consider reading aloud in the same priority stream as nutrition and safety and wellbeing!
If you would like to be involved on March 19th, there are a host of event ideas we are more than happy to share with you.
