|The National Child Writes Competition is open to primary school students in Australia. There are two categories – writing and illustrating. The judges are looking for creativity and for potential, as the winners will be working collaboratively to create their own picture book! There is a $2500 prize pool and a publishing contract on offer!
Kate McCullough won the writing section in first year of the competition in 2013. Her mother recently emailed: 'Kate won the senior section of the 2017 Dorothea Mackellar National poetry competition. I just wanted to let you know that from her early days with Child writes she has continued to write and the one thing she has learned from both experiences is “just have a go; you just never know… Thank you to Emma Mactaggart and the Child Writes program for providing such wonderful opportunities for our children. Kate has thoroughly enjoyed the journey from the planning stage through to that first time when she held her printed book in her hands and saw her name on the cover. The look on her face said it all! The confidence and empowerment that comes with such a program cannot be underestimated. This adventure will be one that is fondly remembered for the rest of her life and I believe will open many doors in the future. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.’
The book cover is from the 2016 joint winners – Nina Richards (Chevallum State School on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland) and Ava McCuspie (Auburn Primary School in Melbourne, Victoria)
